‘Tasua’ to compete in Karbala

Iranian short film on mourning traditions heads to Al-Nahj.

Iraq’s Al-Nahj International Film Festival held annually in the holy city of Karbala is set to host Iranian documentary ‘Tasua’.

Directed by Vahid Haqverdi, the short documentary is about the mourning traditions of Iranians during the annual event of “Tasua” which marks the ninth day of the month of Muharram.

Tasua is the day before the tragic day of Ashura, marking the tenth day of Muharram, in which Imam Hussain (AS), grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and 72 of his followers were martyred and their families held captive.

The documentary depicts the various mourning traditions that are held in Iran on that day, along with the love, passion, and respect that people dedicate to Imam Hussain (AS) and his family in upholding these ceremonies.

Founded in 2014, the Al-Nahj International Film Festival is an annual event focused on the showcasing of short films in the fiction, documentary, and animation categories.

According to the festival’s website, the event’s mission is to “use cinema as a tool to spread a humanitarian message whose mission is to create an environment where people live happily with mutual respect and love”.

The sixth edition of the event is scheduled for April 5-9, 2020 in the holy city of Karbala.
